I replaced a 512 stick of memory with a 1 gig stick, plus one gig already in, it only read 1 gig why?

i checked both 1 gig sticks, by installing each gig with the 512, and it reads 1.5 gigs, but when i install both 1 gig sticks it only reads 1 gig.

the puter is a hyperthread computer any ideas?

the new 1gig stick might not be compatible with your motherboard.

or your operating system (xp,vista..) does not recognize memory more than 1.5GB.

make sure the 2 1gb cards are compatible with your system and are identical.
