  1. Call the maker of the heater the anode rod is the problem and they know what is up!

  2. Was the water heater new? It might have mold sitting in it.

Turn heater off & try draining it with a hose connected to the bottom.

  3. Did you replace it with a new one or a used one?  Sometime soldering the new connections will introduce a funny smell into the water line. Run the water for a few minutes to see if this clears it up. If not

you may need to empty the tank and refill it. Sometimes they do that.

Make sure if you empty it you trip the breaker so you don't burn out the heating elements.

If it was a used tank than there is no telling what was run thought it. You may have to disconnect the water supply line; drain it then pour 1/4 bottle of bleach in it; reconnect the water, filler' up - let it sit for about 20 minutes and flush it by opening up all the sinks showers and the like until you don't get the smell.

Remember to throw out the ice in the ice machine(if you have one) let that cycle and make ice all day so it flushes out.
