Spartak Moscow general director, Valery Karpin, has insisted that he himself made his decision to resign as the Red-whites manager after the Moscow-based club suffered 2-1 defeat against CSKA Moscow at Luzhniki stadium.
“Leaving the post of head coach, of course, was my own decision. Disappointing results prompted me to change my mind. I think that the time has come when I need to try something else after three years. I made the decision after
the match against CSKA Moscow.” The former Valencia man was quoted as saying.
Karpin admitted that Moscow-based club needed a change after a disappointing European and domestic campaign and gave examples of Spartak’s UEFA Europa League and the Russian Cup elimination.
Spartak crashed out of the European tournament after suffering a painful 5-4 defeat in the play-off round against Legia Warsaw. The Red-white, meanwhile failed to reach the domestic cup quarter-final after losing on penalties against
Volga Nizhny Novgorod.
The 43-year-old manager resigned from his post despite guiding the Spartachi to secure the UEFA Champions League qualification after claiming 2nd spot in the Russian Premier League table this season.
