and started chasing it away. later the hawk landed on the branch of a tree very close to me and i noticed it was only standing on one foot. i wonder if this means it leg was broken or what?

  1. Hawks will often rest on just one foot. I see them and owls do this all the time.

  2. It's leg was probably fine.

Small birds often attack and harass predator birds, to drive them away from their nest area.  They can't really hurt the hawk, but they can distract and annoy it.

  3. the hawk you saw at the park was eyeballing a nest of babies and the little bird that came out of nowhere was one brave daddy  protecting it's babies in the nest,it is quite funny to watch the tiny little birds chase away the big hawk, but they don't always win, unfortunately.I'm glad they did today, where you were.
