  1. Thats London for you.....Rats everywhere.

  2. He's looking for your cheese. Stop being greedy and share it with him.

  3. Rats like to change senery like roaches. They have a big territory too.

  4. You know you were going to serve it up  when you invited folk

to your idea of a Mrs Bucket candle lit dinner but you cancelled it when  your Onslo invited himself

  5. Probably got trapped in there.  With no food, he most likely doesn't want to be in there any more than you want him to.

  6. get a trap - make sure it is a rat trap rather than a mouse trap

  7. If it's only one, get a rat trap....put peanut butter on the bait end and place it on the stove.

I know it's gross, but it is generally around the stove they come. Pieces of food fall between the stove and the counter. And also into the crevices of the stove top.

  8. Well you're beginning to nose them now.

  9. Rats are opportunists - they can get anywhere.  I had a rat in my spotless kitchen a few years back - I think it got in through an open window.  Call the council - check the website and look for pest control.  They'll send someone round to lay poison.  In the meantime, don't use any of your surfaces to prepare food - rats are incontinent and pee wherever they go, and spread disease by doing so.  I lived on takeout until I got rid of mine and then I bleached every single surface in the house.  Keep all your internal doors closed so it has as little access the the rest of your flat as possible.

Don't worry - it's not a reflection on the cleanliness of your place, it's just one of those things.

  10. Steady on girl, Mr Rat was most likely a scout sent out by Rats Unlimited and if he puts in a favourable report the whole army will arrive making your life a misery and eating your food.  Incidently the stories about cornered rats leaping for yout throat are only stories.  In the course of my work I came across many rats and cornered them.  In a panic they may run over your foot in an attempt to get away but never come at your throat.  My advice if you see another one is to have a hockey stick, walking stick or just a plain old stick handy and grab it declaring instant war.  Good luck with the rat safari......

  11. You have a two-pronged attack ahead of you.  First, find out how the rat got in--if it could enter, so can others.  Second, kill the rat.

Don't clean your kitchen for a couple of days.  Wait until you see another dropping.  Then buy an ultraviolet light.  Rats urinate and defecate as they run (gross).  The UV light will show the urine streaks.  These streaks should give you an idea at least of where the rat is now.  My bet is under the refrigerator--lots of nooks and crannies, and it's warm in winter.  With luck, you may find also where it got in.  It may live outside of your flat.

Then, clean your kitchen!  Get a good, strong rat trap.  Put a sliver of bacon on the trigger, wrap a couple of revolutions with thread so the rat can't steal the bait.  Place a tiny bit of peanut butter on the bit of bacon.  Set the trap where the rat runs.  Be patient--it usually takes a few days before the rat "acclimatizes" to the new furniture.

If you've not found how the rat got in, take another look around your place.  Check the baseboards under kitchen cupboards, and everywhere else.  If you can fit a finger anywhere, a rat can get through.  Check under sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms.  Do you leave windows open, without screens?  Any window air conditioners?  Look for droppings, which are black/brown and about one-fifth to one-third the size of a raisin, depending on the breed and size.

The bad news is, if you actually saw a rat, it's become very bold and there may be more than one, so re-set the trap and leave it for a good month or so after you kill the first (or last) one.  The good news is, you can kill it.  Do NOT use humane traps, if you set the rat loose it will come back.  Happens every time!  A strong snap trap will do nicely, it'll never know what hit it.  Good luck.
