  1. It keeps the glass clear.

  2. its not just scuba diving. its for swimming too. spitting into your goggles or face mask prevents them from fogging up, so you can see everything clearer.

  3. No not a tradition. I am a PADI scuba instructor and spitting into your mask helps prevent it from fogging up. You can instead use a purchased product but spit is much cheaper!

  4. The main reason this is done is to prevent the goggles to prevent them from fogging up.  The saliva makes a barrier against the goggle surface.

  5. saliva actually has anti-fogging properties

some people use things like Sea Drops (http://www.amazon.com/A-PLUS-SUPPLY-APLU...

    because it is more sanitary

but saliva is more readily available and less expensive.. if you notice, they washed the saliva out before putting on the mask (or they should have)

  6. i do that all the time it clears ur mask of fog if u dont have that soapy defog stuff

  7. they do it because

saliva has natural chemicals in it

    that keep the air outt

so there will be no fog

usually after they spit in them

they are supposed to wipe the spit off

    in the water

    it helps alot

i used to live in the keys

so i know alot about diving

if you ever go you should try it

its a lot less exspensive then anti fog

    and works about the same
