I saw a small black & white bird near Fermilab near Chicago

Question

I have never seen such a bird before. Can anyone give an educated guess to what it might have been.

It might be a White-breasted Nuthatch. They have grey colouring as well as black and white, though, so I'm not certain if this is the bird you saw or not. The grey mightn't be too noticeable if the bird is in the shade or if it's cloudy, so it may be the one.
