I saw black smoke coming from some trees?!?!?

The trees were perfectly fine looking normal trees other than the smoke... Only the smoke came from the one group of fairly large trees. Is this normal?

Some of those smokey looking

trees may have dark pollen?  

I know I have seen a

'green' smokey mist (pollen)

coming out of trees

(to get all over my car, etc)

There is an old saying that where there is smoke there is fire. However that is not the case when the smoke is not smoke. Without being there to personally see it the only answer that I could come up with would be that the "smoke" may have actually been a large swarm of small insects. There are actually lakes in central America that appear to have smoke rising from them when in actuality it is vast numbers of newly emerged flying insects. I would guess that you may have seen something similar.
