  1. This is a fear all moms have. It's pretty much impossible to keep yourself from worrying. As long as you take your vitamins, eat well, and avoid things like drugs/alcohol/cigarettes then you will more then likely be just fine.

Just take care of yourself and try not to worry. I'm sure your baby will be just fine! I can tell you are going to be a great mom! Congrats!!!!

For the record...I had a few stupid friends who didn't take good care of themselves during pregnancy and their babies are just fine. No birth defects at all.

Also...cleft lip/palate is easily treated with surgery. Try not to think about all the things that could go wrong or it will drive you nuts. Everything will be okay.

  2. i was so scared i was going to have a child with a disability, i didnt want my child to deal with that, also we didnt have the finacial means to deal with it... i tried to stop thinking about it

now we have a perfectly healthy boy, acttualy he is quite advanced for his age.

just stop worring its unlikely to happen and u have 7 more months so make it as unstressful as u can

  3. I definitely understand the worry, I have three children of my own and had the same fears.

Your best course of action is to discuss the concerns with your doctor.  Go over any family histories for you and your partner that could result in 'defects' as you call them.  Then, when you have your blood tests and ultrasounds done, you can pay special attention to the results as they will give you a peek into how baby is developing.

Keep in mind, most pregnancies are NORMAL, so to speak.  Mother nature does a very good job of promoting healthy babies throughout pregnancies.  And then, take a deep breath.  Having a baby with a disability of any kind would be upsetting, but it wouldn't be devastating.  You will have a strong bond and unconditional love no matter what, I promise.

I have a friend that had a child born with a cleft palate.  She is a beautiful one year old now that with surgery, looks and is progressing like any other (maybe better).  She knew before her child was born that she would have a cleft, and it did run in his family history.  It made her and her husband stronger.

Take care....happy mommies have happy babies!

  4. Hi, Chelsea!

It is so natural for mothers to worry for the health of their unborn children. We want them to be whole and healthy and happy. And your baby will almost certainly be absolutely beautiful and healthy.

The chance of your child's having a cleft palate is very low. Actual ratios can be found on Wikipedia, and I've attached the link below. On this Wikipedia page, it states, "Cleft lip and palate is very treatable, however the kind of treatment depends on the type and severity of the cleft."

My girlfriend's son was born with a cleft palate, and he had corrective surgery when he was several months old. Unless you look very closely, there is no evidence that he ever had the cleft. He is a darling little guy.

I wouldn't worry about it. Easier said than done, I know. But honestly, most of the things we worry about never happen. Just relax and enjoy your pregnancy, then enjoy motherhood!

And kiss your baby lots. ;)
