  1. Close. It was once known as AMTRAM.

    .

From what I read and understand the movement of military personnel must have been a big part of their business and they recently lost a contract with the military and sighted fuel prices as another factor.   The airline's parent company, New ATA Holdings, Inc.

*(the successor to ATA Holdings Inc. which was also once known as Amtran), has recently changed its name to Global Aero Logistics, Inc.

    .

On April 2, 2008, ATA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. ATA then announced it was ceasing all services, citing the unexpected loss of a major contract for their military charter business along with recent increases in jet fuel prices.  The flights in the air at the time of the announcement proceeded to their destinations, after which all ATA flights were canceled.

  2. It may have been the last time they went bust... This is their second time filing for bankruptcy within three years.

  3. No, ATA and AirTran are two different airlines.

  4. ATA Airlines is a different airline than Air Tran.

ATA Airlines was founded in 1973.

Air Tran was origionally founded in 1993 under the name of Conquest Sun Airlines, They changed there name to Air Tran in 1994. At the time, AirTran had a similar name to American Trans Air (now ATA) and this led to a confusion over branding. This is when American trans air switch to ATA to eliminate confusion.

So they are not related in anyway!!
