I see that the US is considering sending ground troops into Pakistan. Are any Americans alarmed?

This strikes me as a very ominous development. Other countries are as emotionally and intellectually opposed to having foreign troops wandering around inside them as one's own. Pakistan is the only Muslim country with nuclear weapons and it has a powerful conventional army too. Right now, the USA's good friend at the top, Musharraf, seems to be losing out politically. It is no great consolation if the political parties opposing him are more democratic than him, as popular sovereignty is usually accompanied by more nationalism, not less. They would not look on US troops in their country as forces for freedom and democracy. Bush administration officials are pushing this course. What is strange, is that candidate Obama also is pushing this course.

You can read about this on Yahoo, "US weighs stepped-up military forays into Pakistan" by Pamela Hess and Matthew Lee---an AP story.

But this has been in the wind for some time.

Are any Americans alarmed?

  1. No, I am alarmed that it has taken so long and impressed by the restraint that the administration has shown so far in not just going over into the border areas and attacking anyway while in pursuit. The reasons for the Talibans and AQ's resurgence in the Afghanistan is due to the fact that they have been allowed to recruit, train, plan and supply themselves via that border area in Pakistan. How else do you recommend them getting rid of those elements when the ISI is rampant with Taliban and AQ sympathizers as well as much of there Army?

  2. nope, gotta get them where they hide.

  3. I don't think that will happen.  The way our economy is looking and slackened funding, it would be ill-advised to do such a thing.  The UN will probably find another solution than to send in the Coalition Forces.  The UN will have probably ceased in military action due to the US's credibility.  Especially with the Democrats as the Majority Party of Congress.  They find alternate means to strengthen Pakistan's influence from doing anything stupid!

  4. Your right, Bush has been p***y footing around this one. Personally I don't think they would have nuked us if we had simply gone in and done the dirty deed when we had the mandate. Its' a day late and a dollar short. Hesitation is the mother of defeat.

  5. wow tats a very good question but y da h**l would u care?

  6. The U.S. has been sending troops into other countries for as long as I can remember, and apparently for a long time before that.

So I've been pretty much as alarmed by this as I can for most of my life.

  7. What they need to do is sneak in, wearing those robes and then when they sneak up on the bad boys, BOO!
