Aviation Ordnanceman. Everyone said that was a good choice, but one of those people, my father's friend asked me how this job would help me when I left the military. I couldn't answer. And that is a good question. What civilian job would I be qualified for after I left the Navy based on my job experience as an AO?

  1. possibly bomb squad...and there are tons of defense contracts that you have experiences that could help. I am in your same boat kid. I was infanter, and there isnt a huge market in the civilian world for killing people.

  2. I think a better question would be: What would you do with your time to ensure that you can get a good job after the Navy regardless of your job? The Navy is going to give you amazing opportunities to go to college and get plenty of leadership training while you're in. Take advantage of them and you'll go far after the Navy, no matter what you do while you're active. I would recommend taking advantage of the free CLEP exams while you are in school while the information is still fresh in your head. And by the way, being an AO is about more than just building bombs. You'll understand a little better after you get to your first command. Especially if you have a good mentor.

  3. it won't, precisely. not too much call for a  loader of bombs at Southwest Airlines  the EXPERIENCE of being in the military, however will..as will any Clearances you may end up with for having to handle toys that go "BOOM" .

  4. First off congrats.

Second head to http://www.mynavyonline.com Im KJC88 there and there are a list of Navy ratings where there is a specific document on AO which will tell you exactly how it can help you civilian wise.

    Third, here's a link for it: http://extensis.cnrc.navy.mil/factsheets...

    Good luck!

  5. Why doesn't anybody want to have a job where you get three hot meals a day, clean sheets in an air conditioned building, clean underwear, nobody shooting at you, hot showers and cold beer? It all pays the same! Learn skills that you can use AFTER the military. I was, as some would jokingly say, an oxy-moron, (military intelligence, but don't tell anybody or I'll have to kill you). I'm 52 years old. I started two businesses in that field, sold them for a absolute ridicules amount of money. Now, I'm retired, sitting on my butt, drinking 20 year old scotch. Traveling, and living the easy life! Attach bombs to air planes... learn something that will make you fat and happy. Hmmmm.
