  1. When Vista is installing an update before shutting down, it is generally advised that you do not turn off the power manually. Sometimes updates take a long time to install, one specific update being Vista SP1 (service pack). A service pack is a compilation of previous updates for Vista, and SP1 in particular attempts to check if all of your drivers are compatible with the update and disables them as appropriate (I personally had a driver that was incompatible). This check and the overall installation of SP1 can take upwards of an hour, especially if the computer has not been updated before.

If you do decide to manually reboot the computer, it would be like playing Russian Roulette. If Windows was writing a critical system file at the time (as it often does to update files) and it did not complete the operation, then Windows may not boot at all. In the best-case scenario, Windows would boot successfully and then continue to install the updates before allowing anyone to log in.

  2. shudnt take that long, leave on for another hour and if its the same means ur comp froze. jus restart ur comp.
