I am afraid it is really hurting my eyes. Is it possible to have really bad eye problems from this (like blindness or something)? Mostly what I do is just IM. Being on the computer is sort of unavoidable because my school is online. And I have a friend I can only talk to online. I wear glasses...would it be better to have contacts in when I am online? I have the brightness turned down to the lowest setting...anything else I can do?

Thanks.

  1. There is no research that this causes problems, they are mostly urban legends. You are straining your eyes, but that would only cause temporary pain. The trick is to take a break and look at the window preferably at something far away and green, this will help relax your eyes.

  2. Contacts will dry your eyes out more than glasses. They sell eye drops for dry eye. My eyes get tried when I'm online and a drop makes alot of difference.

  3. i dont think it would change if you use contacts the best thin to do is to go less at the computer(reduce 2 hours), check your eyes to see if you dont have any eye porblems with computers

    better be cautious than sorry

  4. check the angle of your screen....if you are constantly looking up at your screen adjust it to be sure that it is eye level.....sometimes the position in which you hold your head can cause headaches or pain in your eyes due to this headache because its how the pain is percieved...you could also adjust the font size for what you are reading/typing and as a last resort you could buy a bigger monitor.....my screen is 19" but you can get them bigger....thats about the size of a small television screen.....oh, and be sure that you have lights on when working so that your only light isnt coming from the monitor only...using only the monitor light can cause eye strain too

  5. Computers can cause eyestrain, headaches, dry eye, and fatigue, but they won't cause any permanent harm (like worsening your eyesight).  Here are some tips:

-Take a break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away (across the room or out the window) for 20 seconds.

-Take an actual break every hour or so and walk around for a few minutes.

-Use some rewetting drops to keep your eyes lubricated.

-Keep lights on in the room.

-Make sure there is no glare off the computer screen.

-Have the screen at least arm's length away, if not more.

-Have the screen slightly below eye level.

  6. all i can say is holy c**p....... and you should take alot of breaks like 5 minute breaks every 45 minutes or so

  7. Sit back from the computer screen as far as possible. Don't spend too much time looking at the screen and every two hours or so rest your eyes for roughly ten minutes as the radiation that's coming from the monitor, however slight, shall damage your eyes or at least strain them as time goes by.

My optometrist advised me that one should remain roughly half an arms length from the computer monitor in order to lesson further damage to ones' eyes.

    Cheers

  8. You could check with the Eye Dr. to see if your vision has gotten worse, it could be eye strain.

You could ask for computer glasses, depending on your age, they may suit you. They are a Rx for midrange.  Also a slight tint or anti-reflective coating.
