  1. Get flexible!

  2. study up on holds. How to apply and defend against them. I did that for awhile before i started and its helped alot. Watch vids on how to apply submissions.

  3. Play chess. No, seriously! BJJ is a big physical game of chess- needs strength in body and mind.

Check out the videos on this site to familiarise yourself with terminology and techniques:

  4. yes okaru people are retarded on yahoo answers .it's become a game of "us against them" TMA wannabes thumb down MMA and BJJ wannabes and vice versa.

Serious students of the martial arts don't waste their time engaging in that c**p.,

As for the question simple answer pay attention do your home work same as any school .

  5. Get comfortable being touched by other people because you're going to be doing a lot of that in BJJ.

edit: lol why would people give me a -1 for what i said? Are people retarded on yahoo answers?

  6. 1. Relax.

The biggest mistake most new people make is treating every spar as life or death, clinging on desperately trying not to 'lose', or using as much muscle as possible so they can 'win'. Save 'winning' or 'losing' for competition: in class, just concentrate on improving your technique. Doesn't matter if you get tapped along the way.

    2. Ask questions.

Don't be afraid to talk to people. If you're confused by something in drilling, find the instructor and ask them to help you out. Similarly, after sparring, if you don't understand what you did wrong, ask your partner. They're in a great position to tell you.

    3. Keep training.

BJJ is a difficult sport, and that means there is a high turnover of white belts. Lots of people start, get frustrated, then quit. Accept that the first few months are going to involve a lot of you getting squashed under somebody else. Stay consistent, and eventually you'll get the hang of things.

    Good luck with your training!

  7. I just started not too long ago myself. It's a fantastic martial art!

I'm assuming you have some sort of martial art background/sports background already.....if not BJJ will help whip you into shape. Be prepared to be very sore and tired when you first start.

Do you own a gi? You'll want to make sure you have a pretty heavy cotton gi to wear. Do you have a cup? It's very easy to take one to the meat and 2 veg when you spar with people. At some point you'll want to pick-up a mouth guard as well.

Otherwise, just go, watch, and do all the drills so the techniques become second nature.
