1. If you have just started out, it is harder to find advertisers or sponsors for your site. You need to focus first on getting traffic to your site.

You can start slowly by applying to ad networks. They typically require a revenue sharing, but they do all the work for you in terms of finding advertisers for your site

    1. Join an advertising network. Advertising networks are organizations that aggregate Web sites that offer advertising space, and sell banner ads (and other advertising options) across them. Traffic requirement is often a minimum of 5,000 monthly impressions, although many do not accept sites hosted by free page services.

    2. Participate in contextual advertising networks. Contextual advertising are text ads delivered based on the content of the web page using an automated system.

Yahoo! Publishing Network (currently in beta and available to US publishers only) http://publisher.yahoo.com/

    3. Sell advertising for your site directly. This is admittedly a more difficult route for a small business site wanting to earn advertising revenues. But hey, as they say: "no pain, no gain!"

    4. Affiliate Programs - you sell other people's products that your audience may be interested in; and you get a certain commission after the desired action was done (whether a sale, a lead, subscription to email newsletter, or however this is defined)

  2. Hi,

There are many ways to market a small business on the web. You can buy banner ads, text links, or use PPC. However, the best way is to get listed in a bunch of portals. Portals and directories are like phone books, and they often provide a lot of traffic because they tend to rank high on Google.

This portal is giving away a free business card holder for lising your business (I got mine a few days ago in the mail). If you want to know about some other portals, just let me know.

  3. Ok what imisidro said is fine if you have money to burn and time to spare. Ad networks charge fees and take percentages.

And context-based advertising?????? why would you need to even consider that? Your context is Puerto Rican travel.

That's pretty well boiled down.... no need to get fancy and try tailoring hits.

You want to get started... right now... keep it simple.. then grow it... Dont overthink it.

My advice is hit the pavement........

    Cold call selling....

You have to be able to prove to advertisers that they are getting something for their money.

How many hits a day, week, month do you get?

Make sure your site is high enough quality to entice advertisers.

Next send a personal professional-looking letter to local resorts, hotels, restaurants, tourism guides, etc.

Call to find out the name of the person in charge of advertising so you can personalize each letter.

In the letter introduce yourself and your company and explain what you are offering. Do not include specific ratres... leave that question unanswered.

Log all your activity and data gathered on a spreadsheet.

Tailor each letter to individual businesses. You do not want it to read like a form letter.

About a week after you mail the letter, make a phone call to the recipient and ask if they received the letter. Then set up an appointment with them to discuss what you can do for them. Do not take no for an answer, but do not go so far as to be annoying. Be cool, be yourself and be likeable. Even if they are not...

Once you meet close the deal... convince them that your website is visited by people who would spend money in their hotel... etc.

    good luck!!
