  1. The meeting that your parents went to with the school personel is called a PPT. That stands for a planning and placement team meeting.  At this meeting, if you had not been referred to special education in the past, the first thing that is usually done is that the team members talk about the areas that you might be having problems with. Usually after that the teachers, psychologist and other administrators decide if you need to be tested for special education to see if you have specific problem areas or learning issues.  At this meeting, a parent or guardian needs to give permission for someone to test you.  From there,  you should be tested. After that, teachers and other team members meet to talk about what they found out from your test results.  This should give them information about your problem areas as well as ways that you could  be best taught.  At this meeting it is decided how often and what amount of time a special teacher might need to work with you.  That is when everyone talks about what might be best for you. At your age you schould be involved in this decision.

If things aren't going well, you can ask for a meeting and decide either what might work better or if your parents decide , that you decline services. (That has to be put in writing though.)

  2. You are not retarded. You probably, like a lot of people learn at different speed and respond better to different teaching methods. Your school and teachers should be working with you to help you get the most out of school and a good education.

  3. No not at all. Getting an IEP means your curriculim is individual. Like really high IQ students who have an individual curricluim have one. IEP doesn't mean your retarded. People with  various of reasons have IEPs

I have had one all my life since I was 4 because I have Learning Disabilities. I use to feel the way you felt about having an a IEP because the teachers sometimes make you feel small when you just have something

going on in your life. I was in Special ed for 12 years in school.

  4. It does not mean you are retarded. It means you have a learning disability and you just learn in a different way.

You can look at your IEP plan and it will have listed what your learning disability is.

Since you have an IEP plan the school is suppose to be helping you with your specific problems.

Your parents will have to get involved with this.

Since IEP plans are mandated by FEDERAL laws, the school is suppose to follow the IEP plan and do what it says to help you.

If the things wrote on it don't help, your parents can request an IEP meeting and tell the school what they want the school to do to help you.

It is NOT all up to the school, your parents are EQUAL members of this IEP team and have the legal right to tell the school what they want them to do to help you..

If the school refuses to do what the parents want, there is more the parents can do.

If your parents don't want you in this special ed anymore all they have to do is write a letter to district sped director stating they dont' want you in there anymore.

I doubt they will refuse this and let you out becuase if the school wants you to stay in they will have to take your parents to court and I know they don't want to spend that money.

  5. My heart aches for you

(read my statement in Why is Autism on the Rise?)

Then I would ask you to use your computer to go to the sites I listed below....the first talks about learning styles and sadly my little friend that is more the problem than you know...No Child Left Behind does not afford teachers the time to meet their students at the level they are taught in their training to meet you at! They learn it, then come into class and because of curriculum and performance requirements handed down from the pres to the Educational Dept etc... you get lost in the

    shuffle.

My heart aches because I know as the mother of a 6 year old who doesn't learn like 80% of his classmates yet can read books front to back, name every planet in their position in the solar system etc we will be where you are because he just does not fit the new mold.....Hang in there. You are BETTER than Fine! Don't keep it a secret, please talk to your parents, tell them to research this with you, switch schools if you need - look into alternative classroom schools that approach teaching at a kid based level....do not just let it beat you down....again please talk to your parents honestly and tell them how this is making you feel!

Knowledge is Power - Good Luck honey!
