Question:

I started sanding down a old piece of furniture and discovered it was veneer.....?

is it OK to continue sanding the veneer cover down and go ahead with staining it? Its Depression era furniture so I'm guessing the reason that the veneer is there is because it was more affordable to build it with inexpensive wood then put a nice veneer on it.

  1. I believe you've posted this question in more than one location, hehehe.....

    Veneer is THIN... some veneer is thinner than others.  It is VERY easy to sand THROUGH it.  Then you've got a nasty looking spot that won't take the stain properly.  So, if you decide to continue sanding, be Very Careful, hehehe.

    As I said in the other post, you might want to seriously consider putting a new veneer over the old.  The other option of course, is to prime and paint it.  (I'd put a new veneer on before I painted, I prefer the look of wood, hehe)
