If I were to start snowboarding next year, will I be able to pick that up this quickly as well? Will being able to ski help me in learning how to snowboard?

Skiing is a lot of fun but most of my friends snowboard so I want to try to learn how to snowboard as well.

THANKS ALL.

  1. There aren't really any transferrable skills between the two so you aren't really at much of an advantage.  Take a lesson, be ready for a few days of falling and you'll be shredding the gnar in no time.

  2. i skiied for 6 years before boardings and it didnt help at all.

everything is completely different: going down, turning, getting off lifts, and especially falling.

deffinetly take some proper lessons and then go out with your snowboarding buddies and they can help you out.

  3. It's probably going to help you with the fear of going fast and all that good stuff

  4. it's easier to learn skiing than it is to learn how to snowboard. but, it's harder to master skiing than it is to master snowboarding.

it's going to help you a little. but, i would definitely suggest getting a lesson when you first on the board.

but, it'll be pretty easy for you to pick up, since you are coordinated, because you ski.

  5. skiing did help me a bit when i switch to boarding. It kind of helps with the balance. But the conceept is not the same. It would probably take about 2-5 times boarding to go on blue hills (depending on ur ability and how steep the hilll is)

  6. Skiing won't really help you all that much. Snowboarding is harder to learn but easier to master. Snowboarding the first day will be h**l but after that you'll catch on.

  7. I went skiing once when I was either 4 or 5 years old, picked it up the first day, and was going down blue runs that same day.  I never went skiing again after that.  When I was about 7, I got a cheap plastic snowboard and would go down a small hill in my neighbors yard, but thats not really snowboarding.  Then I finally got a real snowboard, and it took me three solid days before I could get down the bunny hill without falling.  I have now been snowboarding for about 9 years, and I still am not perfect.  Yes, I can carve, do rails and jumps and such, but put me in switch, and its just like learning all over again.

All in all, snowboarding would take about 2-3 years to get to the point where you feel comfortable with all of the basics.  (It might be shorter if you are snowboarding multiple times a week.)  Knowing how to ski really won't do much for you when it comes to a snowboard besides knowing how a chairlift works.

Some tips I would recommend for beginner snowboarders is:

    1. STAY PERSISTENT- You will fall more than you know when you start to learn, but you have to battle through this stage.  The more you practice, the better you will get.

    2. Don't favor one edge over the other-  Many beginning snowboarders tend to favor their "heel-side" edge when turning.  Break the habit in the beginning and use both edges, you will be thankful you did.

    3.  Falling is the easiest way to stop-  The joy of snowboarding is when you fall, its so much easier to get up than on skis.  Just drop to your butt if you come across some sort of problem.

    4.  Have fun-  Make up games as you learn.  If you are with some friends who are new to snowboarding, play follow the leader or some form of HORSE.  It may seem childish, but its a great way to work on your skills and get your friends to work on their weaknesses.

I hope this helps.  Snowboarding is a great recreation to get into, I highly recommend it.

  8. i was a ski instructor, and picking up snowboarding was no easier for me. the first day was downright painful and humiliating, but i look forward to trying again! put your mind to anything and you can do it! good luck & have fun!

  9. i guess once you've skiied before it'll be a bit easier if you then learn to snowboard! my friend said the first 3 days kill cause your on your face or bum the whole time! once you've dont that it'll be easier
