I have purchased a Briggs and Stratton mower for the second time and this has happened twice, now I have to take the mower back to Lowe's. Do you think the grass is too high.

  1. If you had cut the grass when it was too high, there is a chance that the grass clippings can cause the engine to break it's connecting rod.  Although not common but it can happen.  With the engine off, lift the mower to it's side and try turning the blade.  If it will not turn, maybe you have really broken the connecting rod.  Was the noise some sort of knocking sound before is shut off?  If your grass is too high, raise the wheels so that the cutting height is high for the first pass then work your way down to the desired cutting height.

  2. First check the blade to see if there is something caught on the blade preventing it from turning. If it can't turn, you can't pull the rope. Maybe a clump of grass.

The next thing to check is the oil. Make sure there is the correct amount of oil in the machine.
