it's a little inside joke...

people used to check gold by biting it.  real gold is soft and pliable, fake gold is harder and will not be left with an imprint from their bite.  

by biting their medals, they are basically saying... "i can't believe this is real"  or they are just joking... making sure the gold medal is really gold...

I think they do it that way to poke fun as making sure it is real.

My guess is that they want to see if the medal is real gold or not. Pure gold is slightly soft, thus through a nice bite, they can determine and obtain the feeling of satisfaction that yes, what they are holding is pure gold in all its glory.

As for silver and bronze, I'm guessing they are.. .. hard?
