I still want to umpire at the regional level: Billy Doctrove – Cricket News Update
Recently retired umpire, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Billy-Raymond-Doctrove-c48096, has stated that he has only pulled out of umpiring in the international arena, and aims to remain involved with the sport at the regional level.
“I think that I still have a lot to contribute as an umpire. I want to be involved, be it at Dominica, Windward Islands or regional level,” he said.
“... I have a contribution to make and I feel that I can play a part in helping young umpires take that next step.”
Doctrove, who was part of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625’s Elite panel of umpires, recently called time on a 14-year long career as a cricket umpire. His initial passion was football, and he has the honour of having served as FIFA’s first Dominican referee from 1995 to 1997. However,
he shifted to cricket, and made his international debut in 1998, during an ODI between the West Indies and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in St Vincent.
His Test debut followed two years later, in 2000, when he stood as umpire in a match between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in Antigua. He was promoted to the international panel of umpires in 2004, and elevated to the Elite panel in 2006.
The 56-year-old Dominican went on to stand in a total of in 38 Tests, 112 ODIs and 17 T20Is, and is the second West Indian Elite panel umpire to retire in recent years, after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Anthony-Bucknor-c91028 called it quits in 2009.
Doctrove described the highlight of his 14-year career as having stood in the ICC World Twenty20 final, played in Barbados between England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 in Hamilton
earlier this year. He had been due to stand in the recent ongoing series between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 and Pakistan, but pulled out owing to a family bereavement, and eventually decided that he would not be renewing his contract, which expires at the end of this month.
Citing family reasons as the motivation behind his decision, Doctrove stressed that he has not given up umpiring completely, and wanted to be involved with the sport, but on a smaller scale.
“... I have retired from international umpiring just to be in situation where I can be closer home and to spend more time with the family. I still want to be involved in cricket umpiring at the regional level.”
