  1. Put several open containers with white vinegar around the tree, flies do not like the smell of vinegar.  Or spray half water half vinegar around the tree and around your yard. I use this when entertaining in the backyard also, no flies hovering over our food. It works.

  2. well we have the same problem with a few of our trees, they must be i think attracted to the smell , best way i can tell you to keep flys away and its what i do at our back door is keep a fan on them, they hate blowing air

but i woulndt spray the tree with soap as some might suggest. i always try the homeade remedies before i spend a cent,

  3. Probably not feasible to put a fan by the tree.  Are they flies or those small black gnats that are around plants in the house in the winter.  Assuming that its flies its probably something in the soil thats attracting them. Putting manure around the plant would help attract them.  Try mixing up some vinegar with water (1 to 4) and just spray on the soil.  A little acid won't harm the tree and it should solve the problem.
