I suddenly have myopia! Any explanations?

Up until now, I have had perfect vision. However, just last saturday I noticed that my right eye was out of focus. Is it common to develop myopia that quickly?

Also, are monacles still sold as corrective lenses?

  1. It's not common, but it's definitely possible.  It can occur this way during growth spurts.

You'll have to talk to an optometrist/opthalmologist about a monacle.

Since this is very sudden, I urge you to have your eyes checked; you only get one set, and if something is wrong, you need to know NOW.

    Good luck!

  3. I'll tell you a personal story about myself and short-sightedness.

Yes, it does develop at quite a fast rate. I'm 16 and I remember back in late 2002 when I was 11, I've noticed change in my vision. I, however ignored it when it wasn't bad until a few months later, in early 2003. I went for an eye examination and found it was already -3.50.

Myopia progresses very fast unless you have glasses or contacts as your eyes get strained if they see in blurriness all the time.

Genetics can also play a very big role in you developing it. Also, don't expect it to stop progressing fast until you're around 18-20. For the time being, all you can do is to limit yourself spending time using your eyes on things like reading and on the PC.

If you're lucky, it might not even be myopia but just a temporary eye problem. Whatever it is, you should see your optometrist.
