I suffer from Insomnia?

Is insomnia a mental health issue? Anyway, how can I treat it? I go to sleep around 11pm but I toss and turn and think until around 3:00am in the morning. I really can not sleep. I'm 17 & it's the summer. I don't have any real worries except completing financial aid which is stressing me out a bit. I'm a procrastinator also so my problems for some reason seems HUGE to me. How can I learn to tackle my financial aid & other college tasks head on and not let this affect my sleeping pattern? It's horrible because one night I stayed up til around 8:00am.

  1. take some calcium and magnesium supplement also some extra virgin coconut oil. you should also do a candida and liver cleanse. eliminate all prescription and non prescription drugs. get those all natural things at a health-food store. you can ask about the cleanses at the same place

  2. Yes, your worries and anxiety are keeping you awake.  Write a list of what you want to accomplish to get ready for college.  Next, check things off as you do them.  Develop a time frame in which you want to compete tasks.  Now you are managing tasks.  When you go to bed, tell all your worries this is not the time to think about this.  This is rest time.  Remind yourself of this when going to bed.  To help you relax, get your mind on something else.  Either read, think about a relaxing place, and/or do some deep breathing.  Lie on back, inhale for three seconds as you fill stomach.  Exhale slowly to 6.  Do this repeatedly.  When you go to bed, remind yourself of what you have accomplished and the rest is for tomorrow and days following.  Give yourself a pat on the back for things accomplished.  Now this is your time to relax.

  3. Oh my God, do I feel your pain!

I've been an insomniac ever since I was your age (and I'm now in my mid-twenties.) The first thing I would recommend to manage your stress would be to get problems into perspective; maybe write everything down in a diary before you go to bed - problems seem less huge when you see them written out on a page. Millions of people are going through the whole college application/financial aid process right now - you have to keep remembering that everyone is in the same boat and there are people that you can talk to if need be.

I know you didn't ask for sleep advice but just in case you were wondering, over-the-counter herbal sleep aids that are available in chemists work quite well (just make sure that the ingredients don't clash with any other meds you may be on at the time - I know a lot of herbal treatments disagree with the contraceptive pill, for example.) If they don't work, you need to see a doctor firstly because sleep deprivation can have serious physical symptoms that might need to be checked out and secondly because he/she can prescribe sleeping pills. I personally can't be prescribed this type of medication (as a former drug addict) but I hear they work wonders. You obviously just need to be very careful about how you take them.

    Good luck!

  4. It is in fact a mental issue.

  5. I had the same thing.  This may seem counter intuitive, but try drinking black coffee.  Caffeinated.  It worked for me man!  Just drink it about 30 min before you want to get ready for bed... one cup is all you need.

  6. Don't go to bed until you're tired.

Exercise. (A walk before you go to sleep helps)

Don't drink coffee, eat chocolate etc. within 4 hours of bed time.

Do something boring(not exciting) before sleeping(read a book, listen to an audiobook)

  7. work out really hard.  you'll be ripped up and looking good and you'll sleep like log.

  8. You should check out SilenceYourRooster.com. It's a website about Sleeping Insomnia. Ambien CR is the company that puts out this ccommercialand I've hear that is one of the top medicines for Insomnia. If that doesn't help, you should talk to your doctor. Silence your Rooster has an interesting website and you should check it out.

    Hope my feedback helps!

  9. Dude I totally feel your pain senior year I had insomnia and panic attacks.  First of all you have to chill out, I recommend meditation of some sort.  It doesn't have to be you chanting, it can be just you alone with your thoughts and some music.  Second stop worrying, do what you can when you can and the rest will sort itself out.  Maybe it won't always be in the way you wanted it to be but life is not about getting everything easy.  As for the financial aid/college tasks, I, as I am going into my second year, advise you to take it issue by issue.  Have a notebook or a list of what you need to get done in the day , do it and let yourself rest otherwise you will lose it!!!!  It's not easy getting financial aid but if you keep your grades up and look for as many options as you can, you should be ok, hope that helps...

  10. Insomnia can be one of the symptoms of depression but in and of itself it is not a mental health issue.  It is more likely caused by stress, heat, dehydration (do you drink enough water?), or possibly some other medical condition.  I recommend talking to your doctor and maybe even undergoing a sleep study to rule out other causes, then you can get down to the business of dealing with stress which, from the way you describe yourself, is the most likely culprit.

  11. when i can't sleep, i smoke weed. It relaxes me and later on makes me pretty sleepy. So I study, take a shower, smoke, then sleep like a baby. I graduated with honors, being the President of student body. I also took about 2 years worth of college classes at Cal State LA before graduating, entering college as a Junior.. Dont worry too much. Try to listen to relaxing music too.

  12. ok, here comes the hippie girl with the flowers in her hair....

try taking vitamin b12. it supposedly helps your body regulate the production of melatonin (the hormone your body makes to regulate sleep). and according to my research, many of us have low levels of it.

they also sell melatonin but when i took it, after several weeks i noticed that my joints (bones, not weed) got real creaky and sore. so b12 is the other route for that.

you can also try warm milk. i know, you're not a kitten but hey, it helped ME. it tastes pretty gross but if it works, it's worth it. seems like i threw in a lil cocoa powder.... but be careful, they say choc has caffeine.

the coffee idea, my b/f has ADD so the coffee thing works for him too. he can drink it late at night and it helps put him to sleep. or so he says.....

    good luck and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
