Combination 0056
Pop the lock
Nearly kick the door down
Separating the glinting steel
From the ashen door.
Click the black button
On the metallic blue Mag-Lite.
The white light hits first
On Christmas decorations left standing
Covered in ash.
Moving over to the staircase,
White carpets turned grey
And blue wallpaper turned black.
Further in and down the hall
Dad’s office – untouched,
Meg’s room – door open, slightly damp.
The hallway light is just a glass bowl
That looks like it was cut from obsidian.
The kitchen is a mess.
Pots and pans cover counters,
The wood floors coated in soot
Stretching from the living room.
The frame of a blue chair stands still
At what was a kitchen table.
The couch lost its padding
Leaving a black wooden hunk sitting
In front of a pile of ash
That was a coffee table
In front of melted plastic
That was a television
Next to paper and metal and glass fused together
From DVD cases and books and pictures.
