my computer doesn't have a firewire port so i bought a usb-firewire adapter so i can plug my video camera into a usb port. at first the compter wouldn't recognize the camera. so i tried a different port and it recognized it. but now when i click "capture video" it says the isn't a camera hooked up. i've got everything turned on and hooked up and this is really frustrating.

  1. Did you go to the camera's or the PC's website and download a new driver for the camera.  This will be a driver that will translate usb to firewire, so check carefully.

Check Microsoft windows -- if that is your operating system -- to see if they have a driver.

    Google "camera type driver"

    if that doesn't work

    Google "pc type drivers"

I am quite sure that it is a hardware incompatibility problem.

Look at your control panel, hardware -- see if the camera is even recognized.

You can write to me off-line and I'll see if I can help you more.

I got a disk from a friend who wanted me to print her photos -- I have a MediaGear multi slot accessory for different size hard cards, but it did not recognize her HP camera.

If you have s/w for the camera, be sure to upload it when it asks for driver.

I need more information to give you a more complete geek answer.

  2. Don't use a "USB/firewire adapter". Use a real firewire port in your computer.

If you have an available PCI slot (tower, that is easy/cheap to add - if you have a laptop with an available PCMCIA port, there are inexpensive cards... DO NOT buy a DYNEX...

Firewire 400, IEEE1394a, i.Link... all the same thing.
