wot exactly does a webmaster do as a job

Speaking as a webmaster, I build, monitor, and maintain our company's websites.  I also handle things like company email lists, website user accounts, web related tech problems, and our online ad system.  I track and report website traffic on a daily basis, and ensure online content is online when it is supposed to be online.  And anything else web-related that they decide to throw at me.

It depends.

It depends on the company for whom you work and their needs. The job description and responsibilities can be quite variable.

Webmaster has different job description depending upon the company and/or depending upon  its job requirement. I've been with a company who caters webmasters' services. Site Maintenance, insert images and contents, insert scripts, page layout, these are few task done by our webmaster.

In general, Webmaster job concern about site maintenance, site management, and anything related to its web site depending upon requirements needed and range of its job description. Some webmaster acts as web designer, developer and Link builder. They do task like web page layout, graphic designs, programming, tracking of web traffic. Webmasters are generally experts with HTML.
