in the devalue of a used item?

like I know that as soon as you drive a new car off the lot, the value goes down about half or something.

anyone know this?

Depending on what it is, and how it is used. It also depends on wether or not you will ever want an item like it. I go on e-bay and search the items I am not sure on of value.

yes.  An item decreases in value over a certain amount of time.  A computer purchased today is out of date in 6 months or so and therefore the value is decreased.  Int he other posters example of his perceived value of his motor is flawed.  Although it has low milage, and has been kept in good repair, the intrinsic value of the motor has decreased since it is several years old.  

in business this is amoratizing an item - the cost or value of something (i.e. the copier) is spread over a certain number of months

if you are looking for info on car, look at the blue book value.

By the way, the value goes down until some other force drives it back up - i.e. it's a rare or antique item or  there is an inordinate demand for the item (think Wii last Christmas)

i think its a dumb way of valuing things but people do think that way.i take care of my stuff so i think my value should be higher than half.my outboard only has 70 hours but its 4 years old and always stored right so id want 70%.guess thats why i havent sold it yet.ill use it again before i lose that kind of cash. brokers do have some chart for valuing goods for inssurence company,ask them!

Don't know if this is what you mean but my dad gets to write off 10% of the value of items bought each year.

He has to pay tax on the full value of any purchases in the first year; 90% of the value in the second year; 80% of the value in year 3; 70% in year 4 and so on until the value reaches zero after 10 years and then they're considered worthless and he no longer has to pay anything for them.
