Question:

I think I'm allergic to cinnamon?

Whenever I have Big Red gum, Altoids, some flavors of toothpaste, sometimes barbeque chips, and some other things my tongue feels like it is cut all over. It becomes really sensitive and slightly enlargened. This lasts for about 2 days, then it goes away.

I don't have this reaction when I have things such as Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Apple Cinnamon Cherrios, apple pie, or any type of "sweet" cinnamon but when i have the hot/spicy flavored cinnamon i get it.

anyone know anything about this?

  1. some of those stuff aren't pure. consult your doctor

  2. Talk to your doctor about getting an allergy test ... this will tell you what you should avoid.

  3. I used to eat cinnamon orbit gum all the time and then my tongue suddenly  reacted the same way as yours. I've tried to eat it again but the same thing happens. maybe there is a common ingredient or you are just allergic to different things.

i just stay away from cinnamon because some cinnamon foods/candy set it off and some things don't.

  4. Trial and error. I have food allergies too. It might not be the cinnamon in some of these foods that you mentioned, but the ingredient they use to preserve these foods. Trial and error.

  5. I have the same problem with Big Red gum and Crest toothpaste and those little cinnamon toothpicks but I can eat the same cereals you do or a cinnamon roll and I don't have a problem.  So I have wondered myself if maybe it was an artificial cinnamon flavoring I am allergic to or an derivative or alcohol off of cinnamon?  I am interested to see your answers.
