  1. The cable you've bought is 6 pin to 6 pin - a rare beast!  I'm guessing you've got a Sony laptop?  All MiniDV camcorders have a 4 pin socket, while most PCs have a 6 pin socket.  Therefore most firewire cables are 4 pin to 6 pin.  Sony are one of the few manufacturers who use a 4 pin socket in a PC.  Assuming your PC really is 4 pin, you need 4 pin to 4 pin as shown in the second link.

  2. The cable you have is a 4-pin to 4-pin. There are a few computers and media recorders that can connect using a 4-pin jack which is why a cable with the same connectors on both side is made.

Thea 6-pin to 6-pin in your second link are generally used to connect hard drives together. The 6-pin will not fit in a camcorder.

For camcorders, you want a 4-pin on the camera side (to the DV port, not the USB port) and 6-pin on the computer side (firewire port, not the USB port). Like this:

  3. you probably don't have a firewire card in your laptop and will need to buy one. Take it to circuit city and they will 1)tell you if you have one and if not, 2)sell you one.
