Question:

I think I have some form of paranoia or maybe OCD?

My mom tells me she thinks I might have minor OCD, but I don't know.

I think I am more paranoid.

For example, Every night before I go to sleep I check to make sure all the doors are locked. I make sure the oven and stove are off and unplug everything in the rooms surrounding mine. I look in all the closets and I have to be the last one in the house to go to sleep.

Once I get in my room I look in my closet three times on each side and look under my bed. The I check to make sure stuff is unplugged in my room a few times and look all around my room. I can't have anything on my floor either. Once I do all that I can sleep.

Also, I can't have remotes, hairspray, knives or perfume facing me. I don't like it when things aren't perfectly straight or even. I check to make sure my hair straightener is off about a dozen times before I leave the house, even when I don't straighten my hair that day.

That is only some of the stuff. All of it really stresses me out through out the day. Why am I like this?

  1. it is an understatement to say that you have minor ocd.  you have a full blown disorder.  you have obsessions and compulsions.  it is effecting your life.  it is most times related to a chemical imbalance and with meds and behavioral cognitive therapy, caught early and maintained, you can live an almost normal life.  the bottom line is you need to talk to your doctor about this and find a place that takes your insurance and get some help.  your mother is  minimizing the problem.  if she will not or can not help, then go to your school nurse if you are still in school.  you can emai me if need be.  i am sending you peace, love and light...


  2. classic OCD, i lock all my doors and windows but only because of the prevalence of home invasions not just an urge to do it, i think it is OCD mainly because you look in your closet 3 times on each side, if you apply number to it then its most likely OCD, as well as the fact that everything must be straight.it doesent sound TOO severe..but you should probably seek help and you wont be so stressed out.

    my mom does some of the same stuff-- and she is diagnosed with bipolar disorder

    when i was younger i used to have to touch stuff like ten times or i wouldnt feel rite. then one day i thought about what i was doing and it seemed kind of crazy so i just forced myself to stop.  

  5. You're definitely not paranoid, as paranoia involves unreal perceptions of persecution. It is typical among certain types of schiozophrenia. You may have OCD, though. The only person who can diagnose this is a psychiatrist. This brings us to the next question: how can you determine if you need to seek medical help for this problem?

    One of the main things you should examine is whether your obsession with order is negatively affecting your life in areas like relationships with others and work or school. For example, if you are constantly late to important functions due to repetitive actions like repeatedly checking a hair dryer that you already know is turned off or rearranging your shoes over and over, even though they are perfect, you should talk to a medical professional about this.

    I can totally relate to you on this. I was in the Army, and I was always told that I was super-organized even for the Army! Everything had a place and had to be in its place, or I couldn't stand it.

    There are medications that can help with this, Luvox is an older drug but still considered to be among the best for OCD, but it can have serious side-effects.

    There is a book that psychiatrists use to help disgnose mental disorders, and it's called the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistics Manual, 4th Edition.) You might get it from your local library or browse it online and compare your symptoms to the ones listed for OCD. Diagnosis of OCD requires that you have a certain number of the symptoms listed. The DSM-IV also outlines treatment options.
