I'm thinking I answered a quesiton wrong because I am a dependent but when I got to the question where you enter your parent's assets and also my assets it said based on previous information entered I could skip that part? Is this normal or did I do something wrong?

  1. I am not really sure but if you did they will notify you.  I believe I made the same mistake on my FAFSA and they sent me a verification form.

  2. Your dependency status was determined by your answers to the questions about whether you were:

    Born before January 1, 1985?

    Married (but not divorced)?

Providing more than 50% of the financial support for your child or children?

Providing more than 50% of the financial support for a non-child dependent who lives in your home?

An orphan, who has been declared a ward of the court before your 18th birthday?

An active duty member of the US military?

A veteran of the US military?

If you didn't answer "yes" to at least one of those questions, then you are a dependent student for federal financial aid, and you will be required to provide your parents' income and assets information.

I think you're right - I think you may have accidentally checked the wrong box.

Dependency status is one of the few FAFSA questions that you are allowed to (in fact, required to) correct, so you should go back to the FAFSA website, open your saved FAFSA application, and submit the necessary corrections.

If you need assistance, you can contact the financial aid office at your school, or you can call the Department of Education at 1-800-4-Fed-Aid (1-800-433-3243).

Get on this one, right away, because as the other respondent suggested, this particular type of error can REALLY slow down your eligibility analysis and the delivery of your financial aid money.

    Good luck!

  3. Go back to the fasfa website and click "make corrections" once you correct the mistake, it re-submits the corrected version back to them. It is easier than waiting to find out that you have been chosen for authorization of income.
