Question:

I think Justine's retirement is a good thing in a way. Who agrees?

With Justine leaving and taking her dominate 2007 record with her, it leaves the top 7 or so players within a 1000 points of each other. This should make for a really exciting Summer where every tournament will count.

Justine will be missed and maybe she'll return like Lindsay and Martina, but I'm looking forward to seeing all the top ladies compete for #1 this summer.

  1. i think it will be very interesting to see who will earn thier spot as #1 now that henin is gone. henin will be missed, even though it was a complete surprise of her retirement.

  2. In a way it's kind of a good thing because that means the battle for the top spot in the world will get very interesting because Henin left behind a huge point margin between her and sharapova, I think it'll be interesting, women's tennis will definitely heat up this summer. I liked Justin's game and style of play, but as a person I never really cared for her that much because of the way she acted against Serena at the 2003 French Open, I thought that was ugly and unsportsmanlike. I've disliked her as a person ever since. But her game is phenomenal, I'll give her that and she's a champion because she earned it. But she'll be back, she may be stressed out mentally and physically, but she'll miss tennis terribly and she'll be back, just like Martina Navritilova and Lindsay Davenport.

  3. i dont think so.

the other girls should compete whether justine is there or not.

i was completely shocked when i read about the retirement and i fely especially sad about the fact that i havent watched even 1 of her matches this year.

she was my favourite amongst the  women and i will really miss her at the french open.

i will surely miss her great backhand.

  4. yeah... good competition.. who will end #1 by the end of the year??? hope maria does!

  5. not really a good thing,i wouldn't say. she was a quality player with a game so rare in today's tennis,it's almost depressing she's leaving. and if equally crafty mauresmo never regains her form or confidence the style of game will literally become obsolete in the top echelons of the game. if you think about it,every single player in the top 10 are now virtual clones....they all have two-handed back-hands,play from the back of the court and hit big shots. justine really broke up that monotony with her variety and style. of course,it'll be nice that perhaps we will see some new winners but in the long run it might get boring to watch.

and i don't believe she will return either to be honest. it would be a waste for a player so determined,so hungry to come back when the game has passed her by and then return and not be on par as she was.....she just wouldn't be satisfied just being a top 20,40 player. and i don't think she could take another pounding again.

  6. Not necessarily.  I think the women's game needs more people who play in the style of Justine Henin, although personally I was never a fan of hers.  I have always respected her game and ability though, just not her personality.  She seemed cold and calculating, and her dubious behavior in that 2003 French Open semifinal with Serena and the 2006 Australian Open final against Mauresmo didn't help her in my eyes.  But as far as a comeback is concerned, I don't think she will.  She already told the WTA to remove her points from the computer, just like Clijsters.  Davenport and Hingis (after her first retirement) never did that, which always kept the door open for them to come back, although Hingis's points did eventually fall off naturally after 52 weeks inactive.

  7. I think it cheapens the number one when the real number one just quit 'cause kicking butt isn't any fun anymore. It's good for her if she wants to do other things. It's not good for the game when you know absolutely that there is a number 1 player out there and the rest of the ladies achievements are not being measured against that.

  8. its not good, leaver lots of gap to be filled at top

  9. She's been through a lot but she remained very competitive till the end. And she retired while on top. Her retirement totally changes the landscape in the race in the ladies' rankings

  10. Yes, because there will be more competition.  Though I never liked her personally, she was a great competitor and her game and one-handed backhand was great.

  11. i totally agree. More wins for Venus and Serena. That little cheater Henin, needs to go off in the sunset somewhere. She probably took some steroids and knew she better bow out before they test her at the French Open.

Never liked her after she cheated Serena. Good bye, u will not be missed by many.
