Question:

I think a box I sent via USPS is lost

On 7/19, I sent a box via USPS to Hawaii from Connecticut. I forgot which service I got, but I know it was the cheapest and a step below Priority. The clerk told me that it would take 10-14 days, and as of now, it's been 13 days and I'm starting to get worried. I wanted to get tracking on the box, but the clerk screwed up and just gave me delivery confirmation instead, so I can't even look to see where the box is. How long should I wait to file a claim that the box has been lost? What are my options considering that I didn't get insurance on the box?

  1. visit the UPS store in person and provide all of your confirmation information.  this may be a good learning experience for your future dealings with mail services.

  2. It is a little soon to worry.   It often takes longer than that, even when it isn't to Hawaii.   Since you didn't get  insurance I don't think there is anything you can do if it is lost.

  3. Did you send it parcel post? It could take 4 to 6 weeks. Parcel post mail and packages are sometimes sent by boat and priority mail is usually flown by plane, taking 10 to 14 days. If you didn't get insurance the postal office can't pay you anything even if it was their fault it was lost, that's what buying insurance is for, if you had gotten the insurance you could be paid for the loss.
