  1. I think its c**p.

Explain how, and where do they take carbon dioxide measurements in order to come up with the average?

How much carbon falls back to the earth with the rain?

"Forests actually release carbon dioxide"  Definatly not more than is stored away each year in the form of soil, the volume of the wood added to the tree, the fruit/nut/seed dropped as a food source for surrounding wildlife to eat, and the roots expansion.  Yes, eventually the tree dies, but a majority of that turns to soil, which locks the carbon up.  It is thought that the majority of the earths carbon from the past is now locked up in soil.

Also, a lot of carbon is locked up in the form of life, but probably not as much that is locked up in the form of calcium carbonate... limestone.  Thats a ton of past atmosphereic carbon that will never get released.  A lot of carbon is also sitting at the bottom of all of the oceans, in solid form, waiting to become more limestone.

The carbon dioxide should be like fertilizer for the entire earth.  The increase that we might have caused really isnt that significant in the history of the earth.  People tend to forget that you cant compare the past events of the earth, like the permian extinction,or the warming 55 million years ago, and so on, with today because the ocean currents are far different from how they might have been.  The ocean currents directly influence the climate, and in the largest way.  Basically, I believe nothing like that is possible these days because the ocean currents have a completely different set up, traveling mainly north to south, dispersing heat and air masses all throughout the planet more efficiently than they might have when the majority of the land was in one piece.

This among other thing, I dont feel like typing anymore.

  2. Global warming is a hoax!  Check this out:

Looks like the earth is 'warming up'

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/7219...

Also, do you remember how when Katrina hit everyone was saying that because of global warming hurricanes were going to be more frequent?  Last year there was not a single hurricane that caused damage!

  3. I watched a video a couple of months back and it was all about how the temperature is going down not up. I think the scientists working on global warming and weather changes have conflicting evidence.

This video showed how many different studies carried out by scientists prove that actually the United Kingdom and the rest of the world isn't warming up but is heading towards an ice age.

So don't really know what to believe

  4. aaron

    global warming

We definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.

Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane).

One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

  5. Yes! It is a bunch of c**p!!!

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

  6. i think people who dont care about global warming are c**p. Most of our contributions to global warming is due to human activities. For instance, factories, cars, man-made items, littering, and mostly the lack of care for the environment. That's why we have recycling programs and alternative ways to take care for our planet.

If you live on Earth, you should take care of it like your own child. You just dont go trashing your home, and let it to become a garbage disposal or the dump.

  7. yea, best answer please

  8. I sort of agree with you;

I don't realy buy into all of the garbage that is constantly run on the media, and I absolutely hate it when people push statistics on the matter. Generaly statistics are not very accurate, that is they are often based on numerous variables and can be swayed to one side or the other. Scientists often do this. "Why?", you might ask.

Well obviously the answer is money. Scientists don't get government funding if they aren't accomplishing anything with the money they're given. So as a means of job security they might ignore certain aspects or emphasize others and probe their data until the results are sufficient (and not necessarily accurate.)

This being said, however, I do not condone the pollution of the Earth. Surely it cannot be a good thing, but I don't think the matter is quite as drastic as some display it. Its not a difficult idea to grasp that if we are burning fuel and releasing gasses that are known to trap heat, well we might be ever so slightly increasing the global temerature. Note the idea that the Earth is so incredibly vast and has natural ways of maintaining homeosatsis.

when a forest is burned down it grows back. When the Earth has endured ice-ages in the past: did it not recover?

The plants of Earth survive on CO2 and convert it back to oxygen. Oceans, (need I mention how vast they are) also absorb and recycle CO2.

I do not think the rising temperature is due for much distress. I believe it is simply a natural occurence for the weather to vary. Apparantly temeratures elsewhere in our solar system are on the rise as well which suggests an attractive idea that all of this "Global Warming" is caused merely by fluxuations of the sun. This seems to be the most logical explanation to me.

    DISCLAIMER

I do not claim to be any expert (although I hope I don't appear a fool); this is only my opinion which lacks any scientific study of proof. If I am horribly wrong or mistaken in any aspect please let me know. I would be honored if one were to enlighten me, for I too am only a flawed human being. = )

  9. The earth is either warming up or cooling down and it is never the same.  We have been warming up since the ice age ended 17-18,000 years ago and I don't think you could argue that humans were responsible then and I do not believe you can say that C02 is responsible now.

It is funny how scientists use global warming less now as a term and now say climate change.  Well they have had to change their song slightly since we have been cooling now since 1998 as part of the earth's natural warming and cooling mechanism.

Please don't just listen to me but research things yourselves and ask questions.  Don't just immediately assume that the consensus is right.  Didn't they think a few years back that the earth was the center of the universe and the sun revovled around us?

  10. If you lived in Hull you wouldn't feel so certain. We have had almost non stop rain for a year. Flooding and wind too just to add a little jazz to the mix. While their are people buying wood from the rain forests it will get worse because soon the forests will be gone and we will see the full force of this global warming. Jan

  11. I disagree with you because the scientific evidence proves you're wrong.

There are many basic scientific facts which can only be explained if the current global warming is being caused by an increased greenhouse effect due to carbon dioxide accumulating in the atmosphere from humans burning fossil fuels.

For example, the planet is warming as much or more during the night than day.  If the warming were due to the Sun, the planet should warm a lot more during the day when the Sun has influence.  Greenhouse gases trap heat all the time, so they warm the planet regardless of time of day.  Another example is that the upper atmosphere is cooling because the greenhouse gases trap the heat in the lower atmosphere.  If warming were due to the Sun, it would be warming all layers of the atmosphere.

We know it's warming, and we've measured how much:

    http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science...

Scientists have a good idea how the Sun and the Earth's natural cycles and volcanoes and all those natural effects change the global climate, so they've gone back and checked to see if they could be responsible for the current global warming.  What they found is:

Over the past 30 years, all solar effects on the global climate have been in the direction of (slight) cooling, not warming.  This is during a very rapid period of global warming.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/62902...

    http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/media/pro...

    A recent study concluded:

“the range of  [Northern Hemisphere]-temperature reconstructions and natural forcing histories…constrain the natural contribution to 20th century warming to be <0.2°C [less than one-third of the total warming].  Anthropogenic forcing must account for the difference between a small natural temperature signal and the observed warming in the late 20th century.”

    http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/104...

You can see this in the third graph here, where the dotted lines are just from natural causes, and the full lines are natural + human causes:

    http://www.pnas.org/content/vol104/issue...

If that’s not enough to convince you the Sun isn’t responsible, consider the fact that no scientific study has ever attributed more than one-third of the warming over the past 30 years to the Sun, and most attribute just 0-10% to the Sun.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

So the Sun certainly isn't a large factor in the current warming.  They've also looked at natural cycles, and found that we should be in the middle of a cooling period right now.

"An often-cited 1980 study by Imbrie and Imbrie determined that 'Ignoring anthropogenic and other possible sources of variation acting at frequencies higher than one cycle per 19,000 years, this model predicts that the long-term cooling trend which began some 6,000 years ago will continue for the next 23,000 years.'"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milankovitc...

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/ab...

So it's definitely not the Earth's natural cycles.  They looked at volcanoes, and found that

    a) volcanoes cause more global cooling than warming, because the particles they emit block sunlight

    b) humans emit over 150 times more CO2 than volcanoes annually

    http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/Gases/man....

So it's certainly not due to volcanoes.  Then they looked at human greenhouse gas emissions.  We know how much atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased over the past 50 years:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mauna...

And we know from isotope ratios that this increase is due entirely to human emissions from burning fossil fuels.  We know how much of a greenhouse effect these gases like carbon dioxide have, and the increase we've seen is enough to have caused almost all of the warming we've seen over the past 30 years (about 80-90%).  You can see a model of the various factors over the past century here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Clima...

This is enough evidence to convince almost all climate scientists that humans are the primary cause of the current global warming.

  12. yes, record snow say so

  13. The fact is that global warming has happened many time before and that the time between this event has gone on longer in this period than any and that even without the pollution of man this will happen Even if man never found this resource it will still happen its just a matter of time and our time is coming and no it will not end life on earth but it will end allot and i see that as a good thing As the world itself just like us grows and the ice age is no more than a mid life crises that all mankind goes through

  14. I think the earth is warming but i do not nessicarly believe that it is man caused. I have seen a few videos one being the GREAT GLOBAL WARMING SWINDLE where it suggests that co2 levels follow temparture and not the other way around. This video showed that their are differing oppinions on what is affecting the climate. some suggested that sunspots could have something to do with it.
