  1. maybe he is doing meth

  2. he just needs to relax.

  3. have him talk to his doctor and/or a therapist.

  4. I knew someone that had a mental breakdown and his behavior was more of a stroke victim.  Are you familiar with the Beach Boys?  Brian Wilson had a breakdown and has been slower in his motor skills ever since.  I think you are dealing with someone that has high anxiety and needs to deal with stress better or he could be a candidate for having a breakdown.  I sometimes feel erratic in my emotions as well but I have to stop and breath, meditate, anything to slow down my racing mind. He might be dealing with some emotional damage that he has ignored or doesn't know how to deal with it and it comes out in this erratic manner.

  5. they dont exist its a generic cover all term for other conditions. if its ur ex, why do you care?

  6. well basically, they are inconsolable, edgy nervous, got no interest in anything, panicky, negative all the time. usually wants to be left alone.

  7. A breakdown isn't a clinical term and so its meaning isn't specific - it's something that non-medical people use.

  8. A mental breakdown is a term used to describe a wide range of mental illnesses, without seeing a doctor it would be impossible to diagnose what kind of breakdown he has had and the best treatment for it. Encourage him to seek professional help. Good luck and its nice that you still care for him x

The term "nervous breakdown" is used by the public to characterize a wide range of mental illnesses. Nervous breakdown is not a medical term and doesn't indicate a specific mental illness. Generally, the term describes a person who is severely and persistently emotionally distraught and unable to function at his or her normal level.

Often, when people refer to having a nervous breakdown, they're describing severe depression. Signs and symptoms of severe depression include:

    Agitation or restlessness

Difficulty or inability to stop crying

    Sleeping difficulties

    Dramatic appetite changes

    Indecision

The causes of mental illness usually aren't clear. But these factors may play a role:

    Stress

    Drug and alcohol use

Coexisting medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders and certain vitamin deficiencies

    Genetics

It is used for a number of reasons, including: to hide a diagnosis; to avoid the stigma of a diagnosis; not understanding the reasons for certain loss of function (such as not seeing a doctor, but having symptoms); and not accepting a diagnosis among others.

There are many disorders that can fit within the criteria of "Nervous Breakdown", but those that most commonly occur are those related to:

    Anxiety

    Generalized Anxiety Disorder

    Panic Disorder

    Panic Attacks

    Trauma Disorders

    Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

    Acute Stress Disorder

    Psychotic Disorders

    Schizophrenia

    Mood (Affective) Disorders

    Depression

    Bipolar Disorder

The Disorder that is mimics the most directly however is Major Depressive Disorder (Depression).

On the historical note, the reason the term "Nervous Breakdown" came into being was that people preferred to have a physical (Nerves) illness as opposed to a psychological or psychiatric illness.
