Peaches were my favorite fruit and i had no trouble eating them before. Then over the summer i went out of the country and when i ate a peach my throat go all itchy and weird (kind of like when you feel like you have to cough but when you do cough it doesn't make you feel better) and also my lip got a little swollen (like there's like this bump almost)... plus sometimes my eyes get really itchy and whenever i rub them it doesn't get better... my grandma who was a doctor said it might be because of the fuzz or whatever on the peach and that makes you itchy wherever you have contact with it... and since i was out of the country that may have been the reason. but then i got back about a week ago and today was the first time i ate a peach here and my lip got swollen and my throat felt really weird like i didnt swallow something properly.. also my eyes got really itchy and when i rubbed them (couldn't help it) they both feel kind of irritated whenever i blink and a little swollen... and my eyes are kind of watery... anyone know if these are allergy symptoms? If so how come they appear now when i haven't had trouble eating peaches before?

  1. Sometimes allergies work that way. You could not be allergic one time and then overtime get an allergy to it. Also it may have something to do with the pesticides they use. Regardless I would stay away from them. The allergies tend to get worse in time the more you are exposed.

  2. From your description, you are allergic to peaches. As any other food allergy, the treatment is avoidance. Immunotherapy does not work for food allergies. You can become allergic to something you were able to tolerate before. You could have hayfever symptoms related to other allergens besides peaches. It would be a good idea to be tested by an allergist.

  3. try avoiding peaches for 2 months and see what happens...

  4. It sounds as if you may have oral allergy syndrome, which you can read about on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_allerg...  People who suffer from this often have the hayfever-like symptoms you describe.

Also, OAS occurs primarily with raw fruits, so you might try eating cooked peaches, if you haven't already.

People often develop allergies to things they never had a problem with before.  The fact that you love peaches tells me that, in the past, you've eaten them at every opportunity.  It's often the foods we love, and eat a lot of, that we develop allergies to.

Another issue is the fact that peaches are one of the most pesticide-laden types of produce there are (unless they're organic, of course).  The thin skin enables the chemicals to penetrate readily into the flesh of the fruit.  Sometimes if a food is moldy, genetically modified, or full of pesticide, our bodies are overwhelmed by the toxic "riders" coming into our bodies along with the food, but ends up reacting to the food by association.

You can get immunotherapy treatments (http://www.food-allergy.org/page2.html; http://www.food-allergy.org/epd.html) to improve or cure your sensitivity to peaches.  However, if this seems to be your only allergy, it might be a bit of overkill. In that case, it's best to avoid them if they're causing a reaction.  Sorry!  :(
