I'm fairly confident that I am right in saying this.

I have been living in my house for four weeks that i share with three other people, one of which has lived there for three and another two who have yet to move in.

Our electricity, gas and water prices are fixed at 35 pounds per month, yet the two that haven't moved in are claiming they shouldn't have to pay bills for time not spent in the house.

My argument is that if we would have had to pay whether we were there or not, then i am justified in expecting everyone to chip in for bills. We all signed a twelve month contract, and it was there decision not to move in as early as me.

What do you all think?

  1. yes, they need to pay.

  2. I agree with your friends. They shouldn't have to pay for utilities they haven't used.

  3. Everyone pays for what they use.  They didn't use it.

  4.   YES, legally they have to split on the electricity, gas and water if it was stated that way on the contract, and they signed it.  It doesn't matter if they are living their or not.  It would be the same thing if, out of the four of you, while living their, one decided to go on vacation for a week, and that person saying that they will only pay for 3 weeks because he will be gone for 1 week.  Even though they have not moved in yet, they are responsible for their share of the rent, and the utilities.  Have they paid rent, even though they have not lived their yet?  They should have, because they signed a twelve month contract even though they have not lived their, and under the contract they owe 12 months of rent.  Same thing with the utilities.   You are in the right!

  5. I don't think they should have to pay for utilities either that they have not used. You and the other guy that live there are the ones that used the utilities.

  6. If you all signed the contract that covers the same 12-month period, then yes, they should be paying even if they haven't moved in.  That isn't your fault and the expectation of everyone was that the costs would be divided for a stated 12 month period.

  7. I think they're right - rent they should have to pay because they signed the lease but they're not using the services so should not have to pay for them.
