Question:

I think my Rotty/border collie mix may be pregnant. How can I know for sure without going to the vet?

She is a little over a year old. My bf's sister has a big german shepard/rotty mix that is very smart. he can open doors which is how we suspect they got together. It was during her period, so I believe that means she was in heat. It's been a little over a month now and her nipples have been saggy, but not very much. Her appetite has increased some. She is very affectionate, at least more so than she was. Her abdomen seems a little tight, but it's not like I really felt it before. It doesn't seem that it has increased in size either, but could that also mean she is only going to have a few? Those are the only signs I notice. I thought at first it may be a falso pregnancy, but I've read that that will only last a few weeks, and it's been way past that. We have another female dog under a year old. She is a lab/pitbull mix. They play all the time (pretty roughly) and I was also wondering if that may endanger the puppies as well..

Answers and advice would be very appreciated.

  1. if she is pregnant she would bleed out of her ... you know where. call your vet just to be sure. i hope the father was a nice young gentlemen!

  2. False pregnancies can last the same amount of time a real one can and unless you want to wait another month which i do not advise get off your duff and take her to the vet tomorrow.

She need to be examined and pregnancy established or not. If not get her fixed. If she is start feeding her high quality kibble and do so while she is nursing.

If she is pregnant start looking up information online about the care and feeding of a pregnant ***** and talking to your vet as well. you will need to get whelping supplies ready as well as a whelping/nexting box for her.

Yes the roughhousing will have to cease between her and the other dog. Once she has the pups take her and them to be seen by a vet within 48 hours and then make an appointment for her to be spayed after the pups are fully weaned.

ADD: and if the younger ***** isn't fixed get that done NOW before you end up with another litter on your hands

  3. The only way to tell is by taking her to the vet and having her examined.  A general pregnancy blood test can be performed around day 35 just to confirm whether or not she is pregnant.  Once you go in to see the vet and have her examined, you can ask him what to expect once she goes into labor.  The vet should have written information for you to study so you know what to expect.

  4. "so you belive that means she was in heat" ?

You don't even know what it's called, yet you're leaving unaltered dogs unsupervised?

    F'N BRILLIENT.

    ADD>

    Intelligent?

You're breeding mutts and YOU'RE looking for someone intelligent?

If you knew the male could open doors, then you should have locked them or blocked them.

    It's not rocket science.

Why aren't any of them spayed in the FIRST place?

  5. You are not going to be able to feel any pups in her abdomen until a week or two before she delivers depending on how many she has in there.

You can ask your vet to give her a pregnancy test but it must be done after 30 days since the breeding.

Most signs of pregnancy are the nipples will increase in size,,,the v***a will look more swollen than normal. She may seem to have more energy than normal the first month and can be more agitated and grouchy towards other dogs..  growl for a toy when she never did before.

But ususally within two weeks of delivery you will know by looking at her abdomen. The size of it will enlarge and become firm.

    good luck.

If you are not wanting pups you can have her spayed...ask your vet.
