First of all why do you want to ask him ? And if you don't have any prob to have a g*y as a friend - Ask him. He would be glad to have a girl (you a girl right?) for a good friend without having to pretend.

Now the crux of the prob - are your friendship deep enough for him to open up to you ? Now this here is the messy part. Go back to - First of all why do you want to ask him?

I have a friend that is g*y and took me a while to finally ask. I had the same feeling you did, was afraid how he would react. But we were so close that opening up was like a piece of cake. Make sure that you two are close enough that he can tell you anything. Otherwise, it's worthless to even say a word.  My friend and I sat down and come to find out, it wasn't a big problem me wanting to know. He was actually happy that I asked because he was afraid that I wouldn't accept him into my life anymore. I could never do that to a good friend/or cousin. But we are the best of friends(cousins actually) and happy that I did find out the truth behind that frightened smile.
