I think my cat will pass away soon. How do I keep her comfortable?

Thanks for reading.

I have a 13 year old Persian cat who I love with all of my heart! She's slowed down a LOT lately, and I think she's nearing her time. Not only has she physically slowed down, but she's really just not herself. She doesn't meow much, she doesn't purr, she's not very responsive to her name.

I do not want to stress my cat with a trip to the vet just for them to tell me she's dying of old age or do some painful procedure that will add a few months to her life.

What can I do to make sure my cat is comfortable in what might be her last months? The thought of her passing away is hard enough as is-- I hope there's some way I can make her feel at least a little better.

  1. I know you don't want to stress her out, but she could simply have an infection or something. My cats are 12 and they still have lots of life, but they are also more prone to bladder infections and stuff. My dogs are going through it too. Just a simple urine sample or blood test won't be too hard on her. If your gut instinct is that she's going, and sometimes your instinct is right, just give her a nice warm place to sleep somewhere quietly and pet her gently. Give her time alone, but check on her frequently.

  2. take your cat to the vet and he/she can determine if your cat is dying.  I don't think 13 is all that old for a cat.  My cat just started getting sick and she is 13 and I am having her treated because I want to save her life.  LOL>

  3. i would take her to the vet. i have a cat thats 15 years plus, and still acts like a kitten. if you do nothing and something happens you may always wonder if there might have been anything you could have done to save her

  4. Why not take the cat in for a humane goodbye at the vet? They will give her a pain-free good bye and you can be there to love up on her when the time comes.

Your cat will thank you and be waiting for you on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. I did it for my precious "Big Boy, Oscar Johnson."

Keeping a sick cat alive is a luxury we do not need. Let her go and I feel so sorry for your loss.

  5. My cat is 13 too and if she was not feeling herself, I would definitely take her to the vet.  If it's something irreversable, then that's one thing, if it's an infection that can be cleared up with antibiotics, then that's another.  Certain infections if left untreated can cause a lot more harm than if you just took care of it early on.  A trip to the vet isn't that stressful, and it might be worth it.  I would like to have my cat for many more years.

  6. Your cat may have a treatable condition.  Take her to the vet.  If it turns out the condition isn't treatable, and your cat isn't in pain, your vet may well okay your taking your cat home.  It's only when it's cruel to keep an animal alive that euthanasia comes into play.

I've got my 17-year-old cat on meds every day and sub-Q fluid twice a week.  She's in pretty good spirits, but I know she's winding down.  Still, unless she seems to be in bad shape, I'm going to do what I can to make her last months happy.  My cat is also very vocal, which is common in elderly cats.

Make sure she has food, lots of water and several comfortable places to lie down.  Give her lots of love and talk to her a lot.

  7. Hi, has she had any health issues or does she? Because 13 isn't super old for a cat. I really would take her to the vet and see if something is going on that maybe isn't old age and can be taken care of. My Maine Co*n is 12 and she has many years to go!

  8. She is just getting old.My teacher had a cat since she was little and still has it today is 31 years old!Don't worry. But if you really think your cat is coming near the end of the road then I would suggest to keep her really comfortable. She will feel really comfortable staying with you or on your bed because she loves you. This is how old cats get.She will be okay.If you treat her like a queen and love her alot she will live longer trust me.She will be okay.Like you said taking trips to the vet will stress her out.She will be okay trust me.

  9. If she likes to be held, hold her. If she has a favorite spot make the spot very comfortable. I am so sorry about your cat.I hope this helps. May all my prayers me with you.

  10. I don't understand Your cat cannot be dying of old age as your cat is not there yet, Cats can live past 20

You don't know what is wrong and there may be something very treatable. Find out what it is. There also may be mobile vets in your area if that is your preference
