2 years ago I responded to an internet advertisement about a 2 year old female Shih Tzu that had been rescued and needed a new home. We drove the 4 hours to get her went through the adoption process etc. Once we arrived to get her my husband and I both thought that she looked much older than 2 but it was not an issue for us. We love the breed and wanted a playmate for our other female Shih Tzu. The vet said she is much older than 2 when we got her, she assumed that she was 5 to 6 years old then which would put her at 7 to 8 years old now. She also has a mild heart murmur that she takes medication for daily.

Here is my problem. Last week I put both of my dogs in our kennel that is attached to our back door, instead of putting them in the yard for their outdoor playtime because SHE (the 7 OR 8 YR.OLD) was in heat. Our neighbors have 18 dogs on their property (It is horrible) and they are always getting loose and they can jump our fence. We bought the kennel specifically for this reason because it had a chained roof also. Well one of them got loose, dug under my fence and when I went out to bring the dogs in from their afternoon playtime he was in the kennel with her and they were "Tied"! I am furious and did contact the dog warden once again but that doesn't help the fact that I have an older dog with a heart murmur who is now probably pregnant. Any suggestions?

  1. I never heard of a rescue organization that would adopt out a dog that wasn't spayed, and even if they did, why didn't you get her spayed as soon as you got her? When an unspayed female dog is in heat, male dogs will do ANYTHING to get to her. Every responsible dog owner's dog is spayed or neutered. I don't understand why yours wasn't. And what is your neighbor doing with 18 dogs that aren't neutered???

  2. Get her spayed.

  3. go to the vet and get an immediate spay/abort.

  4. Just let her have the puppys. Then sell them [= lol

  5. take the dog to a vet and have an emergency spay...no more unneeded puppies, and you dont have to worry about her going in heat ever again.

if you let her have the puppies it will be to stressful on her body and could possibly kill her.

  6. Wow very unusual for you to have adopted a pet that wasn't spayed! She has a heart murmur and she is an older dog, do her and yourself a favor and get the poor dog spayed! Also very unusual that your neighbor has 18 dogs, that exceeds city requirements! Unless of course if you live in the country or rural area!

Get your dog to the vet as soon as you can!

    Cheers!!

  7. What kind of rescue adopts out a intact female? You went through an adoption process and they handed you an unspayed dog?!

    Anyways, sad, two words SPAY/ABORT.

  8. Get her spayed.

It will terminate the pregnancy, reducing the amount of dogs in the world that need homes, and prevent your dog from having a potentially life threatening pregnancy.

  9. Yes - call the vet and arrange to have the dog spayed and the pregnancy terminated. Surgery will be much easier on the dog than pregnancy and labor, and then you won't have to worry about her getting pregnant again,or developing a pyometra ( deadly uterine infection common in older, unspayed dogs.) I'm surprised that the rescue didn't have her spayed before putting her up for adoption.
