I think my positioning on the ball is bad when I shoot?

I'm 14. I am a good shooter but sometimes I just don't have the right positioning on the ball. I'm still not strong enough to shoot over my head and stuff. I can only shoot in front my face. Where should my hands be?

  1. Im 14 too and i play high school basketball and im div 2 for district (norwood flames) basketball! ive been to a few of the adelaide 36rs training clinics and they've showed me a few things. when u shoot make sure that u start with ur knees bent then make sure ur hole body is in line with the ring and u HAVE to follow throu and try to use ur middle finger when u follow throu. if ur right handed put that hand directly in the middle of the ball but leave a gap between ur palm and the ball, only ur fingers should be touching it, then put ur left hand on the side but DO NOT shoot with the left hand the power must come from ur stronger hand. practice shooting with both hands. it would be so much easier to show u but obviously i cant. i practise for half an hour everyday and ive only been playing district for 1 season and ive moved up from div 4 up to division 2 which is the second highest and once u get into div 1 spotters come and watch u and then u can get in to the ABA and after that u might even get into the NBA. when u practice make sure to do dribbling and passing drills too and if u follow all these drills and do them every day in about 2 weeks ur skills will improve dramatically. go to google and search up some drills.

p.s if u jump when u shoot then try and jump up not foward because when u jump foward u loose all aim and not enough power and if u dnt bend ur knees ur DEFINETLY wont have enough power to shoot from a far postion.

i really hope this helps if u have any more basketbalkl questions just ask ill prob kno the answer!

  2. Is it any better when you shoot the ball over your head than shooting in front of your face? I don't think so. We have different shooting stances, it's not your positioning on the ball or your shooting stance. You can practice on whats the best shot for you. But, if you want to have a good position, you must find an open look first. Try running around in your half court set and ultimately, you can find your spot that will lead you to an open look! Good luck!

  3. Your shooting hand should really be positioned in a relaxed spread behind the ball with either your index or your index and middle fingers placed directly behind the centre of the ball.

Also try to c**k your wrist back at right angles - it's hard at first but you should get used to it.

Then when you shoot, you should quickly extend your arm and flick your wrists forward at the last second to give some backspin. Your index finger or both your index and middle fingers should be the last ones to let go off the ball upon release (that's why you had to place them behind the centre of the ball before)

I know all this is quite complicated, but if you practice it this way your shot will become more natural and easy over time.

Oh yeah, and NEVER allow your left hand to affect the shot release. Its only a guide up till you release the ball so get it off the ball just before you release.

    Have fun...

  4. As long as you are concentrating on the rim it doesn't matter where your arms and hands are. Repitition and practice will see your shot get stronger. On all shots your shooting hand should end up pointing at the hoop. Good Luck.
