Ok first question:

Do rabbit's get periods like dogs...If they do mine hasn't...

Second Question: Could my bunny be pregnant? She gained a lot of weight since we brought her home, when we first got her, you could feel her bones, no she's super chubby.

Am I feeding her a fattening food? It's just regular ol' rabbit food from the grocery store, and if I run out I give her grass, which she's in love with...

Someone help me plz!

  1. ok, first of all, just feeding pellets is not healthy. you should actually limit pellets and feed timothy hay and greens (lettuce) freely. also if your poor bunny is cooped up in her cage all day she is not able to get exercise. I have a 4 year old bunny and he is litter trained and so well behaved he NEVER has to stay in his cage. Bunnies are very social animals and can get depressed if the are confined to a cage and only checked in on a few minutes today. Google house rabbit society for more info and good luck! =)

  2. To answer your question; no, rabbits don't have periods, they can mate anytime. If you've had her more than 30 days, and no buck, you're safe.

As soon as you're able, do get her to a vet who knows rabbits, (they're not long eared cats!)  and have her spayed.  She will be a much healthier and happier pet if you do.

As for the food, the pellet food sold for rabbits at grocery and pet stores is quite fattening.  In truth it was developed for the meat rabbit industry and is intended to fatten up a rabbit quickly for market and is a cheap and easy way to feed a pet bunny, but not the best way to feed her or him.

I know in some parts of the country, the idea of finding a bale of timothy hay and then storing it is impractical, however, I can give you some suggestions for her diet that you probably can employ easily.

The grocery store; all that wonderful green leafy stuff they sell. Spinach, parsley, cauliflower, broccoli, red leaf lettuce, butter lettuce, (any lettuce except iceberg lettuce, that is very bad for bunny), melons and of course carrots, apples, pears, mustard greens, turnip greens, the tops of carrots.  What I do sometimes is ask the guy who is stocking the vegetable department if I can have what he is throwing away.  Perfectly good- for -bunny veggies here, and free! Rule of thumb I use, if it gives me gas, I don't give it to bunny, so no cucumber, radish and the like.  Rabbits cannot burp!  So avoiding anything that could give a tummy ache is important. The grass from your yard is ok if you are sure that there are no chemicals on it. No bug spray, no fertilizer, nothing.  Flowers, bunnies love flowers! Roses, nasturtiums, any non-poisonous flower.  But do check and make sure that they have no chemicals either.

From the pet store, a mineral block.  Not just a salt l**k, but a mineral l**k.  And the pet stores sell those little blocks of hay.  Bunny dessert!!  Yummm !

Well, I hope this is a start for you and here is a link with just about anything you might want to know about bunny.

And love, lots of love and attention! That is the key to a happy pet.

    Good luck

  3. Hey sis, [i am her real sister BTW]  Wouldn't it be cool if sunny bunny was preggo? Someone help us because we're kids!

  4. You actuallly shouldn't feed lettuce. It gives them diarreah. Pellets & hay/grass is fine. Mine don't have a problem with it.

Now, to know if she is pregnant...

Is she trying to build a nest?

You could always take her to a vet.

Was she previously kept with a male?

Or, you could just put a box in her cage, you know, for a den, and if she is pregant she'll use it and be glad it's there and when you wake up one morning and there's babies you'll have your answer.

Also, are the pellets you're feeding her straight pellets, or the pellets with the weird colored things? I read in the Rabbit Fancy magazine that those colored things are fattening and if the rabbit has a weight problem they should be fed pellets without those.

  5. Why don't you just buy a bale of hay or a large amount of hay at once?

Overfeeding pellets is not good for them.

Gestation is only like 30 days. If you have had her longer than that and she has not been around other rabbits, she is not pregnant.

You need to spay her regardless.
