So, I'm not sure what is wrong with my sugar glider. I have tried increasing the amount of vitamins and decreasing the amount of vitamins. I changed his diet too, and it didn't help. Here is what happens:

I take him out and he plays like normal for about 5 minutes. Then, he freezes, his front feet lift and he kinda cringes up. Then, he starts coughing, or something like coughing. What appears to be saliva comes out of his mouth. It's like a bad fit.

After this, he will stay very still, almost like he is comatose for about 1 to 5 minutes. He seems to barely have enough strength to hold onto my shirt.

After the stillness, he seems to come out of his daze and gets right back to playing and jumping around as normal.

Does anyone know what this is? I tried to research it, but didn't find anything. Please help.

  1. You need to have him examined by a vet as soon as you can. If you do not know what it is, it might be getting worse each day, and eventually might cost his life. Sounds like he either has internal parasites, or problems with his organs (digestive/respiratory/etc?). Don't wait around, vet!

  2. Only a vet will know.

  3. Does he look up into a light? It sounds like he's having seizures. You need to get him into a vet as soon as you can. Gliders are very good at hiding illnesses until the last minute, and most of the time, it's during the night, so you HAVE to take them into an emergency vet. Normally, waiting until morning is too late.

Get him to a vet as soon as you can!

Also, get him on an approved glider diet. If you mix around the amount of vitamins he gets, it could mess up the balance that they need to be healthy. If he doesn't get enough calcium, he could get hind leg paralysis, which is exactly what it sounds like. I've heard that it's hard to treat.

But again, get him into a vet. Does he have a buddy? If not, you should get him one. Gliders can get depressed if they get too lonely and have been known to kill themselves over it.

A good site for approved diets is www.sugarglider.net

Go to the "links" at the top of the page, then go to "diet links."

Good luck with this little guy.
