I think my water has been leaking since yesterday. I don't want to waste a trip to the Dr. How can I tell?

I'm 38 weeks I was at 2cm and 50% effaced last week. I am set up to be induced the 1st. What should I do? There is no pain at the moment. Every once in a while I will have a few contractions but then they stop.

  1. if it is odorless most likely. I would call the Dr before going in and asking over the phone, that would solve the wasted trip.

  2. Call the doc and tell him what you saw and go from there

  3. If you have been leaking since yesterday, I would advise, going in to the doctors asap just to make sure everything is ok. It wouldn't be a wasted trip. Find out why you are leaking if your water hasn't broke.

  4. To heck with "wasting" a trip to the doctor - if you suspect you are leaking amniotic fluid get someone to take a look at you.

It will only take a doctor or midwife a few minutes and is certainly not a waste of time.

If you're not, no harm done.

If you are, they can assess you properly.

  5. You need to call your Dr office.  They can check to see if you water is leaking.  They have some sort of strip they can put fluid on if it turns a certain color they know its amniotic fluid.  It is very common for your water to leak and not break.

  6. The only way to know if your water is leaking is going to the doctor. There is no other way. I thought mine was leaking when I was 28 weeks. I had to go see the dr. Thank goodness I wasn't. They told me as the baby gets bigger you will have more discharge. Call you doctor to be checked out. If  you wait to long it can hurt the baby.

  7. It is extremely important that you get to the doctor as soon as possible. You could be leaking amniotic fluid, which could cause harm to the baby.

No trip to the Dr to ensure the health of your baby is a wasted trip. =)

  8. Don't worry about "wasting a trip" - get to the doctor today as soon as possible.  Your baby would be at risk if you are in fact leaking amniotic fluid.

In any case, I have heard that amniotic fluid would smell sweeter than normal vaginal discharges.

  9. amniotic fluid has a very slight sweet smell so if it is your water you will be able to differentiate from urine or sweat. wear a pad and check it every hour or so and if it is wet then its likely your water is leaking so call your midwife/doc who can test the fluid to see if its amniotic fluid or not.

  10. I thought that if your water was broken, the rule of thumb for delivery was 24 hours, due to risk of infection... you might want to "waste" that trip.

  11. Stand in the bath tub, and if water is running down your leg (and your not peeing) sorry about that, then your water is leaking.  Get to hospital ASAP baby should be born within 24 hrs.

  12. best way to tell is to sit on toilet, lift your stomach up (to shift it) and hold toilet paper to see if you detect it. wipe first to be sure it is new fluid.

  13. Go to your doctors..  It is never a wasted trip when you are pregnant, or call your midwife and she/he will advice you what to do and whether to go in or not!!!  Call them!!!
