Question:

I think that I love my snake...or I'm at least attached to it?

My husband's in the Military and I just moved out to California to be with him. Within the last month, we decided to get a pet. I've always been a huge cat lover, but our apartment complex requires a $300 down payment, and then an extra $30 per month after that.

Needless to say, I was desperate to have something to nurture. I wanted a bearded dragon, but after some research on Ball Pythons (and the suggestion from my husband) I decided to go with a BP. I've only had her for about a month, but I feel like we've bonded somehow. lol, Silly, I know.

I thought she was a "He" up until today. Someone misinformed me and said that only the males have "pinchers" around their anal area...But after some extensive researching online, I not only discovered that it was untrue...But I also learned how to "pop" my python and see it's s*x! (Youtube has tutorials from breeders)

It's a girl! Anyway. I feel like she's my baby...people have the misconception that snakes are disgusting, unfun pets. This is my first "exotic" type of animal, and somehow I feel very attached to her already. Is that odd? Does anyone else feel this way about their snake?!

  1. hun your not being silly at all

ive had all my snakes for years and would never dream of giving them up or letting any harm come to them. they are my babez.

although it is said that snakes don't bond with you, i think that they can come to trust you at least, I'm very attached to all my snakes and feel that in some way they are bonded to me as well,

i have had all of my snakes from the moment they were born, they are treated like my babies and love to be handled they often come out at night watch movies with us and then go back home when they feel like it.

i think they can sence different people thou as we took on a rescue who didnt seem to like men at all but got on ok with women it took her a while to settle down with us but she will now go to my other half and let him handle her so they must feel something!

also lmao i was told the same thing about my very first snake and have ended up with a male called akasha! ive never told her that she's a he thou lol.

  2. Hon, relax, don't listen to all the cranky breeder sites that talk about snakes like their chucks of money and pretty scales. They are reptiles, and reptiles are different from mammals and don't have the same sort of attachments that dogs or cats do. Still, with my personal experience I feel that they do have trust and do seem to understand the differences in people. TO DIFFER FROM POPULAR BELIEVE! I treat my snake like a baby, and I've almost got him to slither onto my hand and out of his tank by him self. So yeah.

I've had him sense he was fresh out of the egg, watched him eat for the first time and am watching him skin for the first time. Another thing I disagree with is the handling stuff. I agree that it CAN be stressful and not so fun for them, but seeing how I was handling my snake so much before I even got to bring him home he seems to enjoy being handled a lot.

So it's hard to say that they become attached to YOU, but I do know my snake trusts me and enjoys when I handle him. I also know I am completely in love with my snake just like all the animals I care for. <3 so don't feel weird!

  3. Girl this is the reptiles section, everyone here is all attached to their pets whether they be bearded dragons, anoles, leopard gecko's, turtles or even snakes!
