I think if they did this we would see more interesting game play than just people overpowering their opponent with fast serves. That's not fun too watch. That's why I never liked Pete Sampras much. He was all serve. Opinions anyone.

  1. we all know what it's like to watch a boring game when one of the players is "all service" style (ei: nadal-karlovic game in Queens). BUT asking for them to limit the speed of their service would not be fair at all.

If they start limiting the speed of the service to prevent beautiful aces, then they should also also limit the speed of the returns to prevent winners, passing shots, smashes, shots that force errors. If this was the case then their would be no point in playing the sport because it would be too easy. Can you imagine watching professional players play like any other ordinary club player just because some stupid rule limits their capabilities? This would be more boring than watching an ace go by every other time.

  2. yup, as slow a serve that the ball reaches your court after you done with your cup of coffee?

  3. I agree that Samprass was boring to watch, but they slowed the courts down now, which also slows the serves down (after they hit the ground, of course, not their windspeed).

It's insane to put a speed limit on them, though, so my answer is no.

  4. This has to be by far one of the most ridiculous questions/statements I have ever heard.

  5. Thats ridiculous overpowering servers are just important to this game as great baseline players... and yes it is fun to watch b/c an ace does not happen all the time and it shows you just how great players are... If there was a limit there would be no Sampras no Roddick and many more... Why take something away from someone when it takes great skill to pull off a great serve... and its great to see someone return great power serves like agassi vs sampras... please dont tell me you didnt like watchin them play

  6. why not make the service area a foot smaller that way youll see how good the servers really are? and it gives spectators the chance to see good rallies not one second of play where you can only hear the ball hitting the wall and not seeing it lol

  7. Yes, I agree w/ you. Too many fast serves just destroy the depth of tennis. Good point to be raised to the tennis world.

I enjoyed Agassi a lot more than Sampras in the 90's. But lately more players go for just big serves, male and female.

What about the 7' tall Karlovic ? All he does is throwing fast serves, and technically poor.

  8. That is an interesting statement. However i completely disagree with you on all levels...

Sport is all about the way human beings perform certain actions under the various forces present on Earth (such as gravity or friction). We are fascinated by the way we can always surpass these limitations, when will we stop breaking records and limits?

Tennis is just one of the activities in which we manipulate a balls motion through the various forces. Look how we apply Topspin, allowing us to hit it with such force - yet the ball creates a magnus effect, manipulating the air into a rotating whirlpool - The ball curves down! Isn't that amazing?

By putting Limitations on these activities, such as applying a limit to serving, we are totally forgetting about what sport is...

I understand what you are saying though. I know what its like to vs that 6'5 player smashing serves at 200+kmp-1. But its necessary to keep the true essence of sport alive. I am a tennis player and i don't see the problem with games ruined by perfect service. To me it's great tennis. If you can win the rally without the opponent touching the ball go for it! My tip for you is if you play tennis, practice your serve, it's an important facet of your game. If you don't play tennis, join a club. Its great fun!.

    Hope this helps.
