Question:

I think tofu made me sick?

I made some tofu in chili tonight and now I'm not feeling so well. I feel a little hungry, but thinking about eating is making me nauseous. I have been off meat and sugar for about four days. Is this normal after the transition? And if the tofu was undercooked could I get food poisoning?

  1. you probably ate tofu that was old and expired, there are already cooked tofus in the markets and there are tofus you will have to cook!!!!!

  2. You aren't going to get food poisoning from Tofu, it's highly unlikely anyway.  If this is your 4th day off sugar then that can contribute to flu-like symptoms.  I'm on a detox of no sugar myself and I'm not feeling that well, but my sister went through this too and she said that it passes after about 5 or 6 days...it's just your body adjusting.  If you feel really sick, have 8oz. of all natural fruit juice.

    Good luck and feel better!

  3. with all of the above posts, you may also like to get a new cutting board if its been previously used for meat, espescially if its wooden or has a lot of cuts in it. cutting boards are great places to get food poisoning from if its been used for animal products

  4. You could possibly get sick due to foodborne bacteria ( f the tofu wasn't cooked enoguh. However this is unlikely. You may be allergic to soy- have you had any problems with it before? I would get checked out by a gp if this continues, You said you have been off meat and sugar; although this is good you need to ensure you get all your essential amino acids (proteins) and enlugh fibre and carbs to keep you going. Goood sources include quinoa, lentils, buckwheat and soybeans. Good luck with going vegan/vegetarian :)

  5. It's unlikely that you'd get food poisoning from tofu, unless you left it out on the counter for hours or otherwise got it contaminated.

Soy can be tough to digest until you're used to it. That might be the case, especially if you ate a lot of it. (Heck, I've eaten soy for a long time and I still get a bit wobbly inside if I eat too much in one sitting.)

Try using less tofu and more "normal" beans (kidney, black, whatever) next time.

If you have dairy, maybe drink a little bit of milk.

  6. You may of just over done it on the protein. Chili has beens so really doesn't need the added tofu. Some people just don't care for tofu and you may be one of them. If you have the same problems with: soy milk or veggie burgers, you may have an alergy to soy.
